Nacreous clouds over The Isle of May

This winter we had a cold snap for a couple of days with some biting polar winds. Fortunately it also provided the opportunity to witness some rare weather formations, including these nacreous clouds. Also called 'mother of pearl' clouds, they are usually easier to spot in the Arctic, but they were visible one morning above the Isle of May.

The colours are stunning and come from sunlight reflecting off tiny crystals within the clouds. In order to capture their luminescent quality I selected an iridescent glass that mirrored their prismatic hues. I wanted to contrast this against the sunrise over the Isle of May and the rolling waves in the foreground.
