The Caves of Caiplie

The Caves of Caiplie are situated on the Fife Coastal Path, between Crail and Cellardyke. Made of red sandstone, they have been eroded by the wind and the waves over hundreds of years to form unique undulating structures. They have an amazing sculptural quality which is enhanced by the striations in the rock.

In this panel, I've sought to capture the vibrancy of the sandstone and the gradations of colour which have been exposed by gradual weathering. You can glimpse the sea and the horizon through the cave opening.
