Net Loft
Private commission for some wonderful clients in Cellardyke.
The brief was to create a panel that responded to both the setting and the history of the house. It faces the sea, with direct access to the shoreline from an enclosed garden at the back, and uninterrupted views out towards the Isle of May.
Built over a century ago for a fishing family, the house still retains its original net loft - a space used to hang, dry, mend, and store the nets that were so vital to the local herring industry. At its peak, the coastal villages of the East Neuk were home to the largest fish market in Europe.
The design draws directly from this context. A cresting wave arcs across the panel, with the sun dipping delicately over its peak. Beneath the surface, a cross-section of the sea reveals the outline of a fishing net, threaded with bright buoys. The buoys are picked out in a series of roundels, including a particularly beautiful streaky hand-blown piece from English Antique Glass.
This one was all about colour, texture, and movement- trying to capture something of the sea's shifting energy.
